White Sands National Monument, located in the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico, was once home to a vast ancient lake known as Lake Otero. Following the last Ice Age, the lake gradually dried up, exposing large gypsum crystals beneath. Over the millennia, weathering and erosion broke down the crystals creating 275 square miles of stunningly beautiful pure white sand dunes.
